Abstract

Abstract Louis Nicolas Davout was born into an aristocratic family (D'Avout) in Burgundy, France. He entered the king's army in 1788 with the rank of second lieutenant. Serving in the armies of the north during the Wars of the French Revolution, he rose to the rank of general of brigade (1793). Napoleon named him marshal of the empire in 1804, and Davout served in the major campaigns of the empire, seeing action at Austerlitz, Auerstadt, Eylau, Wagram, and Borodino. He served as minister of war during the 100 Days.
