Abstract

Summary The paper describes that aspect of Information Retrieval known as Data Base Retrieval and considers its application in education. A brief description of some of the important aspects of this topic is given, i.e. data collection, organization, storage, retrieval and analysis, and the desirable features of a system suitable for non‐computer specialists outlined. The paper is based on experience gained with such a system designed and implemented at Hatfield Polytechnic, and examples of the use of the system on two contrasting sets of data are included.
