Abstract

The Act of 11 December 1998 transposing the Directive 95/46/EC of the European Parliament and the Council on the protection of individuals with regard to the processing of personal data and the free movement of such data: a concise evaluation. * * This article is a slightly revised version of a former publication in the Journal of International Computer Law. Privacy protection is a fairly new issue in the Belgian legal system and is in the course of continuous development. The growth to maturity seems, however, far from being attained yet, due to economic and political constraints, though also because of a lack of adequate conceptualisation of the notion of ‘privacy’. This article examines the implementation of the EC data protection directive in Belgium and the problems that still remain in its integration into Belgian law.
