Abstract
The collection of data is an essential step in the systematically identifying and analyzing of performance improvement opportunities and selecting, designing, and justifying interventions to address them. There are two prerequisites to collecting useful data: (1) basic knowledge of research and data analysis methods and (2) knowledge of a variety of data collection instruments. This chapter provides an overview of ten different types of instruments: work samples, observation, surveys, work diaries, case studies, process mapping, literature reviews, interviews, focus groups, and critical incidents. Each overview includes a description of the method, and a summary of its strengths and criticisms. The chapter also discusses factors to consider in selecting data collection methods and fundamental guidelines for the application of these methods. Controlled Vocabulary Terms Data analysis; data collection; Performance appraisal
