Abstract

This chapter introduces the International Software Benchmarking Standards Group (ISBSG) repository and its use as a foundation of the software project estimation process. It presents the ISBSG group provides an overview of the ISBSG data collection procedures. The chapter provides examples of individual ISBSG benchmarking reports of completed projects, and discusses how to prepare to use the ISBSG repository. The ISBSG makes available to the public a questionnaire designed to collect data about projects, including software functional size measured with any of the measurement standards recognized by the ISO. For every project dataset sent to the ISBSG, the organization sends back an individual benchmarking report, which includes: productivity benchmarking, quality benchmarking, assessment of the project data submitted and normalization of the effort reported. Before analyzing data from any repository, including the ISBSG repository, it is important to understand how fields are defined, used, and recorded.
