Abstract
A response is offered to an article by author Miguel A. Hernan in the issue on causal inference concerning the cause of diseases within the field of public health epidemiology. An overview of the use of observational research in epidemiology, including in regard to the formation of causal questions through observational data, is provided. Statistical association's relationship with causation is discussed.
