Abstract

Describes an integrated streamline towed data acquisition vehicle that has internal computer based tow pattern control. With a depth range beyond 400 m, this system is well suited for research in the upper ocean. The towed profiler described can continuously transmit real time data from the data acquisition controller to a computer based ship-board system via the single conductor tow line or can log data internally. Routinely collected shipboard data such as GPS, sounding, and tow table tension can be processed in the deck unit computer system along with data collected from the towed acquisition system to control the climb/descent rates and data sampling rate of the smart platform. A duplex communication link using a single conductor armored cable and standard modem interface signal connects the deck unit with the towed platform. This permits the towed body to perform in flight calibrations of its sensors. Up to eight spare communication channels are available for user specific measurement requirements. With the modernization and miniaturization of the tow body on-board electronics and sensors, it is possible to maintain a lighter single conductor cable while broadening the spectrum of measurement capabilities. Most sensors can be field replaceable or simulators may be attached so that quick field verifications are possible. The paper also discusses the safety features incorporated in the design of the smart platform. These safety features are made possible due to the platform based intelligence and are instrumental in ensuring system and data integrity. >
