Abstract

The Unconscious, Self-awareness, and Mystic Experience Self-awareness reveals that every organising function of the ego is preceded by a state of passivity and receptivity. But this state of mind is generally discarded in public opinion, also in psychology and psychoanalysis, and even in theology. Psychoanalysts study this mode of awareness through the effects of the unconscious. The phenomenon of mystic experience is structured in a similar way. This paper will discuss these structural similarities, looking at M. Henry´s Phenomenology of Life and the theories of Freud, Bion, and Meister Eckhart.
