Abstract

Street names are generally intended for orientation purposes. Only on closer inspection, at least in German-speaking cities, a historical program is discovered. A city decides for itself which persons are to be honored by a street name. Marc Augé showed in an essay that this program is often only unconsciously and not consciously perceived by a passenger. But the naming of streets is part of a culture of history based on a community of remembrance. In order to ensure that street names are not mere landmarks, historical research and the didactics of history should make the discourse behind the naming process visible again. Street names are by no means »only« sources, but rather narratives, which can and should be deconstructed.
