Abstract
In cooperation with the Leibniz-Rechenzentrum (LRZ, Provider of the Munich.Campus Network), the Staatliches Hochbauamt (Bavarian State Bureau of Building Affairs), the Directorate of the Bayerische Staatsbibliothek (BSB), its IT Department, Groben Engineering and several other companies, the concept of a Local Area Network (LAN) based upon fibre (to the desk) technology, FD-DI backbone topology and TCP/IP as a communication protocol was designed. Along with the process of refurbishing the entire building of the Staatsbibliothek in the last three years, this design was transformed into a modern IT environment on an intranet/internet basis. This project is far from finished, since the refurbishment is still going on in certain parts of the building. The main applications and components, however, are working well. It was only together with LRZ as the new net provider (in former times the Directorate General of the Bayerischen Staatlichen Bi-bliotheken was in charge of providing IT resources for the BSB) that this new IT concept could develope to a stage so quickly where BSB was able to open its gates to the internet community. The following will give an overview of the main steps BSB took between 1994 and 1998 and of what the future will bring.
