Abstract

This article describes a training curriculum for general and disorder-oriented techniques of institutional group psychotherapy that has been developed by the authors as a special offer for colleagues who, as psychotherapists in institutions, have to run groups without a realistic opportunity to undergo an intensive training as a group psychotherapist. The 90 hours program comprises training of general theories and principles of group psychotherapy and group dynamics, experience-based work to learn disorder-specific approaches (e. g. groups with patients suffering from eating or anxiety disorders) as well as a continuous self reflection of the process within the group of the participants. Our experiences with two complete courses of the curriculum will be described. Despite very positive evaluations, structural as well as content-related improvements should be possible. Generally, participation in the courses really seems to reduce the individuals' fear of groups.
