Abstract

The fluorescence spectrum of naphthalene crystals has been investigated between 2 and 100°K with a spectral resolving power of nearly 104. The spectrum of naphthalene purified by extreme zone refining contains almost exclusively the bands of the intrinsic fluorescence starting at 31 476 cm-1. This spectrum is analyzed completely in terms of the well known RAMAN freqencies of the naphthalene molecule. — The temperature dependence of bandwidth, bandshape, quantum yield and absorption edge is determined by the coupling with the thermal lattice vibrations. The essential properties are well described by the exciton theories.
