Abstract

This review article presents the three basic principles of clinical toxicology (three pillar model): primary detoxification (gastric lavage and administration of activated charcoal), secondary detoxification (e.g. hemodialysis, hemoperfusion, delayed and repetitive administration of activated charcoal), and the indications for administration of specific antidotes. In six sections (recreational substances and drugs, household products and chemicals, pharmaceuticals, plants, fungi and foreign bodies) poisoning in children and adolescents, which are particularly relevant in routine practice are described. The selection was made from the perspective of emergency calls regarding poisoning: they are either particularly frequent causes of poisoning or the poisoning is characterized by not generally known diagnostic or therapeutic aspects. Parts of this article have been published in a previous edition of the Monatsschrift Kinderheilkunde.
