Abstract
Darwin’s Finches, also known as the Galapagos finches, achieved iconic status as exemplars of evolution. Darwin famously misidentified several of the finches he collected in the Galapagos, but he eventually recognized their potential significance to the study of evolution. Many naturalists followed Darwin to the Galapagos and collected numerous finches along with the fauna of the Galapagos. Darwin’s finches emerged as an icon of evolution when David Lack published his study of the finches in 1947. Peter and Rosemary Grant’s long-term study extended to many aspects of the biology of the ecology and evolution of the finches.
