Abstract Curtis Schmidt plates of the Magellanic Clouds show that both the LMC and the SMC contain dark nebulae. The dark clouds in the Large Cloud are, however, much more prominent than are those in the Small Cloud. It is suggested that this difference is due to the fact that the SMC gas has a lower heavy-element content than does the gas in the LMC.
