The rapid flow of industrialization in several sectors, including education, educational institutions, especially PTKI, must balance the education system with the times, which is expected to be able to give birth to creative and innovative students. This research is a field study that aims to reveal the concept of MBKM at UIN Sunan Kalijaga. Data was collected through in-depth interviews with the Head of the Study Program, the Head of LPM, the Dean, and the Students. This article aims to analyze the concept of independent learning on an independent campus (MBKM) in more depth, tracing the industrial mindset at UIN Sunan Kalijaga. The study results show that the industrialization of education is conspicuous in the MBKM policy implemented at UIN Sunan Kalijaga. This is seen from the industrial factor, which is of great concern in educational design, meaning that national education only determines students to become skilled workers as the main objective, contrary to the objectives of national education in Bill 20 of 2003, which contains that the purpose of education is to form character and personality as a priority as teachings in Islam. The MBKM programs at UIN Sunan Kalijaga also emphasize that skilled workers must meet the demands of the business and industrial world as an integral part of alleviating unemployment. It is different from the teachings of Islam through the continuous messages of Muslim scholars that education aims to give birth to perfect humans.

In addition, the UIN Sunan Kalijaga Campus Mosque is also a symbol of openness and respect for diversity, which supports inclusivity efforts in the campus community. In conclusion, UIN Sunan Kalijaga's Inclusive Religion Laboratory is a concrete example of how local wisdom and religious values can be integrated into religious education to promote inclusivity, tolerance, and interfaith dialogue. This article suggests that other religious institutions adopt similar approaches to strengthen efforts to create harmony in a multicultural society. Dear Editor, In an article published in the Journal of Public Health, there is a new issue about how universities prohibit students from effective leadership that must include personal conscience and the value of bad luck itself.1 This is interesting to discuss because students learn to socialize and lead student organizations on campus. Student organizations should be a forum for students to express their aspirations and make changes. For student organizations to run according to their goals, namely, to produce talented student leaders and to avoid organizational diseases, it is necessary to instill a psychological climate in these organizations2,3,4–6 Psychological climate is a psychological climate conditioning within an organization. Illnesses in student organizations have a huge impact on the leadership structure, students’ mentality is formed healthily or not depending on their main environment on campus.7 It is so sad when students who are said to be ‘agents of change’ become embryos of the emergence of an oligarchy disease that kills democracy; when oligarchy develops, there will not be equal opportunities for all students to hold structural positions in student organizations—at the department, faculty, university and even national levels.

This study examines the contradiction between the role of university students as role models in defending freedom of expression and the reality of Indonesia’s higher education system, which remains entrenched in hierarchical structures and a culture of conformity. Using a qualitative research method through literature review and descriptive analysis, this study reveals how Indonesian students face a dilemma: on one hand, they are expected to be agents of social change; on the other, they must operate within a system that restricts their freedom of expression. The findings indicate that this contradiction creates structural tensions that weaken the effectiveness of students as role models for freedom of expression. This study recommends the need for reforms toward a more democratic and participatory higher education system to support the role of students as agents of social change. Background: Historically, university students have played a crucial role as agents of social and political change in Indonesia. From the independence movement to the Reformasi era in 1998, students have consistently been at the forefront of advocating for various social issues, including the right to freedom of expression. This role has positioned them as role models within society in promoting democratic values and human rights. However, the current reality within Indonesian higher education institutions reveals a fundamental contradiction. The system, which still upholds hierarchical authority and emphasizes conformity, often restricts students’ space for expression. The top-down academic structure, strong seniority culture, and institutional control mechanisms create a paradoxical environment for students who are expected to be champions of freedom of expression. Objective: To examine the contradiction between the role of university students as role model s in advocating for freedom of expression and the hierarchical and conformist structure of Indonesia’s higher education system. Methods: This research employs a qualitative method by integrating a conceptual approach, a statute-based (legal) approach, and a case-based approach. Results: Normatively, students are positioned as agents of change and role models in upholding freedom of expression—in their thoughts, attitudes, and actions. However, in practice, Indonesia’s higher education system, dominated by hierarchical values and a culture of conformity, becomes a structural barrier that limits such freedom. This contradiction leads to a range of multidimensional impacts. Conclusion: The contradiction between the ideal role of students as role models of freedom of expression and the hierarchical nature of the higher education system has generated psychological, social, and intellectual consequences that hinder the development of their critical thinking. Therefore, structural and cultural reforms within university environments are essential to creating an inclusive, democratic, and dialogic academic space.
