Abstract
Various sugarcane juice media were tested for the production of D-arabitol by Endomycopsis burtonii. The influence of magnesium, phosphorus, potassium, and nitrogen concentration in sugarcane juice media upon D-arabitol production was studied. Concentration of phosphorus previously suggested for good production of D-arabitol in synthetic medium by E. burtonii, decreased polyol production by this microorganism on sugarcane juice media, under the conditions of this work. Medium containing 50% of sugarcane juice with the addition of 0.09% urea was found to be the best sugarcane juice substrate for D-arabitol production. In this medium the microorganism produced the polyol at good yield of about 42% of sugar consumed, after 48 h of fermentation.
