Abstract

This article examines the relationship between Dante -in particular, the Divine Comedy - and the theological thinking of the late mediaeval Florentine confraternities. Particular attention is dedicated to Manuscript 1738 from the Biblioteca Riccardiana in Florence, which includes a series of religious texts written in the vernacular. The study first sets out to demonstrate that this codex was created by assembling texts produced by and/or circulating amongst a Florentine confraternity during the late thirteenth century. The focus then moves on to an analysis concerning the possible ties between these texts and some passages in the Divine Comedy.
