Abstract

The paper entitled “Serjeant Musgrave's Dance” or the First Step Into an Unknown Realm aims to bring into the limelight how the only performance signed by Radu Penciulescu at Târgu-Mureș State Theatre, Romanian department (1969) was set for the stage. Our paper will follow the local theatrical environment that absorbs the production (how does it absorb it? is another question that will be addressed). We will also follow the new artistic direction advanced by Radu Penciulescu, a new creative course for which this precise performance represented just the first step. In this endeavour, we’ll try to capture the characteristics of the above-mentioned performance, bearing in mind one of Ion Fiscuteanu’s statements which in an interview, labelled “Serjeant Musgrave's Dance” as a unique theatre experience.
