Abstract

For the control of Aujeszky’s disease (AD) under Danish conditions, infection control seems preferable to disease control. An efficient diagnostic technique is available, the elite breeding system (comprising about 20 000 breeding sows) and the AI system (covering about 20% of the services) is free from the disease, and the Danish geography facilitates movement control and the establishment of regional control programmes. The boar stations have been ruled by legislation including AD control since 1970, and AD has, since April 1980, been subject to general legislation worked out in accordance with Danish experience and tradition for control and eradication of contagious diseases in domestic animals. In February 1981 the first regional control programme was implemented for the island of Bornholm.
