Abstract

Psychiatrists often divide the world of patients into those who suffer the pain of their illness in the form of symptoms such as depression or phobias, and those who inflict the struggle of their psyche on the world in the form of out. The author of this book about some of the more wrenching kinds of the latter conditions tells us that much acting out is kept hidden and surfaces only in moments of severe stress and crisis. As a guide to these dark and secret parts of what we now call behavior disorders, Dr Weissberg is an exemplary instructor in telling us just how to recognize the deviant behavior, how we may expect to react to it, and how we should handle it.
