Abstract

Power system stability is the ability of a system to reach a normal or stable condition after having been subjected to some form of disturbance. These disturbances are a major concern owing to the severe complexity of modern power systems resulting from large number of interconnected synchronous machine. With recent advancement, the trend is to employ Flexible AC Transmission System (FACTS) devices in the existing system for better utilization. These FACTS devices contribute to power flow improvement as well as power system stability improvement. This paper presents the modelling and simulation of a series connected FACTS device namely Thyristor Control Series Compensator (TCSC). The controller is designed and implemented for a 3 machine-9 bus multi-machine power system. Real-Coded Genetic Algorithm (RCGA) is incorporate to search for optimal parameters of controller. Different cases considered are; power system under study with PSS only, with TCSC having no control and with Genetically Optimized TCSC controller. After a rigorous comparison, it is observed that the proposed TCSC controller with RCGA technique enhances the power system stability effectively under fault conditions.
