Abstract

Mice die of radiation pneumonitis between 80 and 180 days after irradiation of the thorax. Using the endpoint of LD 50 , the RBE for fast neutrons has been measured and shown to be low compared to most other normal tissues. The effects of fractionation of X-rays are similar to those found in other tissues. A maximum sparing, obtained by measurement of D 2 -D 1 , was found to be about 500 rads of X-rays at an interval of 6 hr between doses. It has been tentatively attributed to repair of sublethal damage of surviving cells. For time intervals greater than 6 hr between doses, the LD 50 is increased by about 8 rads per day up to 28 days. This increase is attributed to a slow repopulation of surviving cells.
