Abstract

The damage profiles of 180 MeV Cu 11+ and 100 MeV C 5+ ions in LiF have been investigated by the measurement of optical absorption, and the results are compared with the distribution of calculated energy deposition and the microhardness. A good correspondence is found among the depth profiles of F 2 absorption band, microhardness and electronic energy loss. The region where Li metallic colloids precipitate is closely related to the maximum in the electronic energy loss. In the damage profiles produced by carbon ions, a large extension of colored layers is observed beyond the range, a feature being attributable to β − irradiations resulting from nuclear reactions in addition to secondary electrons.
