Abstract

An interdigitated PVDF transducer (PVDF IDT) has been built in this study. This sensor generates and receives Lamb waves for damage detection. Its main features are low unit cost, easy installation, small size, superb flexibility, and the capability for wireless operation and remote interrogation. The PVDF IDT developed in this study has been applied on laminated plates composed of anisotropic carbon fiber reinforced polymer (CFRP) materials with a series of embedded defects. Results have shown that these PVDF IDTs are able to qualitatively identify the existence of defects by generating size-sensitive outcomes. The interpretation of the complex wave signals has been conducted through the employment of advanced signal-processing methods. Time-frequency representations (TFRs) such as the continuous wavelet transform (CWT) has been employed for data analysis.
