The political state of flux in Afghanistan resulted in uncertainty about the death toll from the earthquake, but United Nations figures estimate that it was approximately 1,200 people (Ambraseys and Bilham, 2003). The United Nations and Afghan authorities estimated that about 20,000 families suffered impact from the earthquake, including those living in small villages elsewhere in the floodplain and along the range front, within the loess hills, and in the mountains...
