Abstract

Tip die-back symptoms are common in asparagus and could be the result of feeding by tarnished plant bug, Lygus lineolaris (Palisot de Beauvois) or the alfalfa plant bug, Adelphocoris lineolatus (Goeze). Various levels of adults of each species were caged on greenhouse plants for 1 week and removed and the plants were observed for symptoms of tip die-back. Plants were sacrificed 2 months later and evaluated for fern growth and fern and root dry weights. Both tarnished plant bugs and alfalfa plant bugs were capable of causing tip die-back symptoms in asparagus. Although the possibility of long-term damage cannot be ruled out, plants apparently recovered readily from damage. Moderate levels of damage can apparently be tolerated, even by young plants, and the economic injury level for mature plants is probably quite high.
