Abstract

Yacouba Konaté, who acted as Artistic Director of the Dakar Biennale—or Dak’Art—in 2006, discusses the mission and function of the Biennale, the challenges in selecting artists, and issues around the audience for and reception of African contemporary art within Africa and the international art scene. He contrasts radically different views (Okwui Enwezor, Hassan Musa, Amselle, and others) on what it might mean to be an African artist and to perform contemporaneity in a global marketplace.
