Abstract
Background and aim: Nonalcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) is the leading cause of chronic liver disease in Western countries. It is well documented that NAFLD is closely related to obesity, along with insulin resistance and type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM). There are increasing evidences showing a strong link between low serum 25-hidrossivitamin D3 [25-(OH)D] levels and NAFLD. Aim of this study was to assess whether daily cholecalciferol supplementation is able to modulate glucose homeostasis and prevent hepatic steatosis in an animal model of fatty liver disease and westernized diet, high in fat and fructose.
