Abstract

This chapter re-creates daily life at Prospect Bluff and compares it with daily life in maroon communities from across the Western Hemisphere. The maroons at Prospect Bluff enjoyed an unusually high standard of living due largely to British contributions made prior to their departure. Accordingly, the maroons lived in well-built homes and had a large quantity of essential supplies, such as tools and weapons. The former slaves enjoyed a good diet because they cultivated crops and hunted. The prosperous community interacted with whites, blacks, and Indians and formed a variety of different relationships with these groups, ranging from close allegiances to mortal enmity. Life at Prospect Bluff was dynamic.
