Abstract

Daily dietary calcium and magnesium intakes in healthy toddlers, aged 2 to 3 years, in the Antwerp region, Belgium, have been evaluated by duplicate portion sampling. The elemental content was analyzed by atomic absorption spectrometry after acid destruction and heating in a microwave oven. Mean calcium intake (811±219 mg/day) was high compared to intakes from most other countries but fits the population reference intake (PRI) for Belgium and the recommended dietary allowances RDA-value well. For magnesium the mean intake (192±34 mg/day) was higher compared to other countries and was more than twice the recommended daily allowance for this population group. Calcium and magnesium intake by healthy toddlers in the Antwerp region seems to match the recommended allowances well.
