Summary

Introduction

The preservation of walking abilities and being able to move freely around in the community have a high impact on the quality of life (Vagetti et al, 2014). To overcome future costs of a rapidly increasing elderly population and the expected higher disease burden, it is crucial that patients with chronic or progressive disease maintain independent mobility and are physical active. In Denmark, patients with chronic or progressive diseases, such as stroke, Parkinson’s disease, multiple sclerosis or rheumatoid arthritis are entitled to free of charge physiotherapy treatment specified by strict criteria defined by the Ministry of Health. Parkinson’s disease, multiple sclerosis or rheumatoid arthritis account for more than half of these costs and are of special interest. The purpose of the free of charge physiotherapy settlement is to increase/maintain physical function or to delay the loss of physical function within this group of patients, depending on the type and severity of the disease
