Abstract
Relations between church and state were worn in clashes of worldviews in the course of the nineteenth century, resulting in the breaking of the covenant throne-altar, with a progressive increase in the search for the autonomy of the Church. However, this tension between the two powers had not yet overflowed during the 40s and 50s, particularly in the Amazon. They shared the members of the Catholic Church from the state management exercise by means of elections and confirmation in the regular functions of public bookkeeping in the parish books, as in the provision of pastoral and symbolic services. This study aims to demonstrate the intervention of D. Jose Afonso de Moraes Torres, continuer in the Diocese of Para the feature of conservative Catholicism in tune with the Holy See, in line with the introduction of ultramontanism of theses underway in Brazil. This pastoret took care of deploying Catholic reform measures to give greater emphasis to the sacraments, as evidenced by his performance when he was a member of the national parliament.

Em decorrência dos fatos mencionados, é importante perceber que concomitantemente ao bispado, no qual o processo ultramontano começou na Amazônia, D. A documentação até agora revelou uma intensa preocupação do bispo com a formação e orientação dos religiosos no momento em que iam a repassar a doutrina católica aos fiéis, bem como as fontes de sua vida política mostraram a imagem de um religioso preocupado por os assuntos da Igreja nos momentos de execução de cargos políticos. Dessa forma, a preocupação do bispo com os abusos cometidos pelos fieis que contraíam matrimônio era evidente, porém mais do que isso, ele procurou sintonizar os padres da diocese de acordo com os ensinamentos dos presbíteros de outros bispados, articulando de alguma forma a maneira de direcionar sua administração eclesiástica a outros governos espirituais do Império. Pretendemos confrontar nossa hipótese com a historiografia e as fontes existentes, tendo em mente a relevância de refinar como foi efetivada a constituição das lealdades ao trono e ao altar, mediados pelo ultramontanismo e pela modernidade
