Abstract

Cutting chip treatment is an important issue in turning. It is considered that stable chip flow in direction leads to improvement in chip disposability. Not only the disposability but also the improvement in finish quality also depends on the chip flow direction, especially aluminum alloy turning. This research investigates controlling the chip flow direction by neither tool geometry nor cutting condition but cutting fluids application. From some experiments employing some alkanes as lubricant, it can be found that cutting fluid evaporates and is carried to cutting point because boiling point of alkane reversibly correlates extent of affecting length between cutting point and supplying point of the fluid.
