Abstract
D-Serine is a direct, full agonist at the D-serine/glycine modulatory site of the N-methyl-D-aspartate-type glutamate receptors (NMDAR. Along with an important role in NMDAR modulation, D-serine is critical for LTP/LTD and long-term plasticity and synaptogenesis. D-Serine is under active study as a treatment for psychiatric conditions, particularly schizophrenia, anxiety and cognitive disorders. High dose D-serine (60 mg/kg and greater) appear efficacious in schizophrenia, but nephrotoxicity concerns limit study.
