Abstract

We have studied theoretically the proton pick-up ({ital d},{sup 3}He) reactions leading to deeply bound pionic atoms. The forward scattering cross sections for an incident energy {ital T}{sub {ital d}}=600 MeV have been calculated using the effective number approach for the {sup 208}Pb target nucleus. It was found that the pionic 2{ital p} state has the maximum cross section among all calculated states. We conclude that ({ital d},{sup 3}He) reactions produce pionic atoms in a detectable manner.
