Abstract

[Reading rooms, reading and reception of literary texts in students’ pamphlets entitled “Znicz” published in Krakow and Lwow (L’viv)] The paper discusses an interesting and, so far, unresearched topic of the development of students’ pamphlets and magazines, reading rooms and school journals published in Krakow and Lwow (L’viv) in the 19th century. They constitute a contribution to the reading culture, show readers’ tastes and opinions on old and contemporary literature, their cultural choices or talents. The author discusses Lwow’s “Znicz”, a scientific-literary biweekly for young people, published in Lwow even before 1904 and Krakow’s “Znicz”, published from 1905 onwards. Further, the author corrects and determines dates. She positively reviews the publication “Znicz” as an instrument of developing reading and cultural interests, awakening the need of participation in culture, developing patriotic feelings, preparing readers for team-work, teaching various forms of reading of both scientific and literary texts and also preparing for work in journalism and literary and theatrical criticism.
