Abstract

The article deals with the beginning of the Czechoslovak national movement in Russia during the First World War. The author describes the change in the soldiers’ moods during the war and under the influence of the revolutionary events in Russia. The article shows the formation process of the Czechoslovak Communist Workers’ party in Russia, analyzes the activities of propaganda and agitation by Russian, Czech and Slovak Prisoners of war and legionaries as well as their participation in the armed struggle on the side of the Bolsheviks. Particular attention is paid to the split within the Czechoslovak national movement and the communists’ attitude towards the branch of the Czechoslovak National Council in Russia. On the basis of published and archived materials, the author takes a fresh look at the activities of the Czechoslovak left during this period.
