Abstract

Four new and five known triterpenoids were isolated from a small-scale sample of a dichloromethane partition of an ethanol-soluble extract of Cyrilla racemiflora L. (Cyrillaceae) collected in Dominica. This extract repository was donated to IHVR by Merck Research Laboratories, Rahway, NJ. The structures of the new compounds were established by analysis of their CD, IR, UV, NMR, and mass spectra, and the structures of known compounds were determined by comparison of their spectroscopic data with those reported in the literature. All isolates have been evaluated for their cytotoxicity against the HT-29 human colon cancer cell line, and several of these compounds were found to be active, with a known compound, barringtogerol-C 21 angelate, being the most potently cytotoxic, showing an IC50 value of 1.8µM.
