Abstract

The effect of single doses of cytotoxic drugs on the acute arthritis elicited by the injection of microcrystalline sodium urate into one intertarsal joint of pigeons or chickens was functionally assessed. Procarbazine and actinomycin D were effective while no inhibition was provided by cyclophosphamide, methotrexate, cytosine arabinoside, 6-mercaptopurine, vinblastine, vincristine and BCNU. It is suggested that within the anti-inflammatory repertoire displayed by antiproliferative agents, distinctive properties leading to particular interference with cellular performance might be exploited for selected therapeutic indications.
