Abstract

Four related Cirsium species of western North America are considered with respect to morphology, cytology and distribution: Cirsium acaulescens (2n = 34), C. congdonii (2n = 34), C. coloradense, and C. scariosum (2n = 34). A new Californian species, C. congdonii R. J. Moore & C. Frankton, is described. Phylogeny of these and other related species is discussed.
