Abstract

The study presents a detailed observation and analysis of karyotype and comparison of the morphological characteristics of the six distantly located populations of Isoetes coromandelina L. f. It has been observed that the plants of I. coromandelina are distributed throughout India and most of them are triploid except the sporadic occurrence of a few tetraploid and hexaploid cytotypes interspersed amongst them. A detailed karyotype analyses of diploid, triploid and tetraploid cytotypes indicate that all the cytotypes of northern India might have originated from the same common stock of the Coromandal coast plants and have later on migrated to different parts of the country.
