Abstract
Cytomegalic inclusions were observed in 5 of 22 mammalian species examined, with an overall incidence of 4 per cent. Inclusions were demonstrated in 12 of 87 guinea-pigs, 7 of 76 rural and 5 of 73 wild urban rats 17 of 81 ground squirrels and 3 of 67 field mice. No symptoms were detected and the inclusions were confined to the salivary glands. Differences in the distribution of lesions, thc cellular response and the morphology of the inclusion bodies were of minor importance. In each host, slightly differing cytomegalic changes were recognized. The occurrence of cytomegalic inclusions in wild rats, field mice and ground squirrels suggest the existence of natural foci of cytomegalic inclusion infection in Rumania.
