Abstract

1. The material used in this investigation is as follows. Pollen mother cells (Colocasia antiquorum, SCHOTT) Root tip cells (Colocasia antiquorum. SCHOTT) Root tip cells (Colocasia gigantea. HOOK f'.) These were fixed in BOUINA'S solution and stained with HEIDENHAIN'S iron-alum-haematoxylin. 2. The haploid number of the chromosomes of Colocasia antiquorum is fourteen (Fig. 1). Tha diploid number of the chromosomes of Colocasia antiquorum and Colocasia gigantea is twenty eight (Gigs. 2 and 3). 3. During the meiotic cell division in Colocasia antiquorum lagging chromosomes are observed and, very often, pollens with many nucleoli are formed. The sterility of this plant may be due to the irregular meiosis.
