Abstract

High resolution observations in the light microscope of meiotic chromosomes from the germarium of Drosophila melanogaster were supplemented with tracings from electron microscopic pictures by Dr. A. T. C. CARPENTER. The following points were established: (1) There is a pre-leptotene pairing of centromeric regions. (2) Thread connectives exist between all centromeric regions, a common chromocenter being formed, which is incompact until late zygotene. (3) Oocyte chromosomes in homozygous c(3)G flies form a common chromocenter and homologues show a proximal synapsis. (4) X chromosomes and the Y are associated with their nucleoli during meiotic prophase I. – Our observations (1) to (3) substantiate the hypothesis of a procentric synapsis in meiosis of the Drosophila female.
