Abstract

(Int J Gynecol Obstet. 2023;160:516–525) Pregnancy causes a shift in the mother’s immune response that causes the maternal immune system to protect the fetus from outside antigens but not reject the fetus itself. Cytokines are cells largely responsible for this selective immunity that ignores the fetus, and a balance between pro-inflammatory and anti-inflammatory molecules is necessary for a healthy pregnancy. An imbalance in cytokines and other types of immune cells associated with them can lead to complications, one of the most prevalent being hypertension and pre-eclampsia. This article is a review of available data on cytokine imbalance during pregnancy and associated issues.
