Abstract

Two apomictic cytotypes, a diploid and a triploid, in the widely ranging species Pteris cretica Linn, are described from the Western Himalayas. Chromosomal associations in the 16-spore-mother-celled sporangia have been analysed, and on this evidence, coupled with morphology, the origin of the two cytotypes is discussed. It is argued that the diploid apomict in all probability originated in a previously sexual species. This cytotype is in part parental to the triploid and acts only as the male parent. Genetically speaking, the triploid is AA'B in constitution. It represents a new category of triploid apomicts in the classification of Mehra, because of its probable new mode of origin.
