Abstract

Chromosome numbers arc given for 16 taxa belonging to nine species of the subgenus Gymnodes. Seven species in the campestris-multiflora complex are uniformly diploid with 2n = 12. Two species in the “racemosa group” are pseudo-octoploids with quarter-sized chromosomes: L. tratersii (Buch.) Cheesem. (two vars) has 2n = 46 and L. ulophylla (Duch.) Ckn. et Laing, 2n = 48. Crosses within and between the New Zealand taxa of the campestris-mulliflora complex are usually fully fertile, though several F2's have reduccd fertility and some dwarf cushion-like plants and chlorophyll-deficient seedlings occur. Hybrids between New Zealand and Australian taxa are less fertile than those within New Zealand taxa, and hybrids between New Zealand taxa and species of the Northern Hemisphere are almost, or completely, sterile.
