Abstract

ABSTRACTThe rate of cell proliferation in the basal cell layer after oral administration of aromatic retinoid was investigated with the cytofluorometric method. Guinea pigs were fed aromatic retinoid in daily doses of 5 mg/kg body weight for a period of 14 days. Epidermal cell suspensions were fractionated on colloidal silica polyvinylpyrrolidon to obtain a relatively pure fraction of basal cells. After being smeared on glass slides, they were stained with acridine orange. At 1 day after the administration, there was no change in the DNA distribution pattern. However, G0/G1 ratio decreased strikingly. By 3 days, there was an increase in S cells. These results suggest that epidermal cell proliferation by oral administration of retinoid is due to the increase of cycling cells.
