Abstract
It is hoped that this paper has summarized the background of xylem cell differentiation studies and has set the scene for the papers to follow in this issue. We have also indicated that many areas of the subject are still contentious and in need of further study. New techniques developed in the area of cell biology should prove useful tools in further study of this most interesting area of cytodifferentiation. It is hoped that further advancement of our knowledge in the study of xylem cell development will help understanding in the field of cell differentiation in general.
